Why do I do what I do?

(Checking the route on the 4116m Sarymat Pass, Fann Mountains, Tajikistan)

Ever since I was a child I loved exploring the hidden corners in the local woodland or wading through the thick reed on the shores of my native IJsselmeer in The Netherlands. It's simply the kind of curiousity of "What's on the other side of that hill?", literally a dyke in my case. I recognise an adventure in finding a new path in my local Pentland Hills just south of Edinburgh  (which is the aim everytime I venture out) or try an unknown trekking route in the Wakhan Corridor in Afghanistan.

I find great satisfaction in sharing knowledge about exciting remote and desolate places. That is exactly why I thought a country like Tajikistan deserves a trekking guide book on which I have been working on since 2010. I couldn't believe the information available about this country was so limited given the fact that it matches mountainous countries like Nepal and Pakistan (and especially on adventure sports like biking, trekking and climbing). A project was born… The guidebook is now available on PDF, see here. I'm also fascinated about looking at certain countries from an adventure sports perspective (I moved to Tunisia in May 2013 and will do a lot of exploration of rock climbing and mountain biking in a country where adventure sports are virtually non-existent).

About 37 North

I chose the name 37 North, because I decided to start my first big travel project on the flanks of Pik Engels, a beautiful mountain in the south of Tajikistan and at 37 degrees northern lattitude. By chance I moved to northern Tunisia which is located at the very same lattitude!

All my (professional) travel activitities are done under the 37 North umbrella.
